NFHC members must be 18 years of age or older and U.S. citizens or permanent U.S. residents. Some members have completed college and are heading to medical or graduate school, some have been out of school for many years. All AmeriCorps members must have a high school diploma or G.E.D., or commit to earning their G.E.D. during their term of service. We value individuals who have already demonstrated a commitment to service through previous volunteer work and who have an interest in a career in the health profession or human services.
If you are interested in serving as a NFHC member, the first step is completing an application. Click here to begin the application process.
Once your application is reviewed and approved, you will be contacted for an interview. Interviews are done in person although telephone interviews are accepted if a member is out of state. After the interview, the applicant will view the available service descriptions for the organizations/host sites that are requesting an NFHC member. The applicant selects three of the service descriptions that they are most interested in based on their skills, interests, goals, and ability to contribute. The candidate’s resume/AmeriCorps application is forwarded to the designated host site mentor. If the site mentor agrees that the candidate is a possible match with the position a meeting/interview will be arranged by way of the site mentor contacting the applicant. After the applicant speaks with all of their choices and feedback is given to the NFHC Program Director from the candidate and the site mentor, a match is made.
Before an applicant can be enrolled in the NFHC, they need to provide the Program Director with the following documents: proof of citizenship or naturalization (birth certificate, passport etc), high school diploma, and photo ID (student ID, driver’s license, public assistance ID). All members will also need to complete a Criminal Record check. Full-time members applying for AmeriCorps’ childcare benefits are required to provide birth certificates for all children requesting care.
Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis and kept on file for 1 year.
The NFHC grant year runs from September 1 through August 31. The program opens the application sometime in March or April each year through the AmeriCorps website. Interviews for potential members usually begin in May. The application will remain open until all positions have been filled.
