Potential Member FAQ

What and when is the term of service?

The service term begins the Tuesday after labor day in September and         continues for 46 weeks, ending late July. top

What will my schedule be?

Each host site creates their own schedule for the member at the beginning of the service term. Most members typically serve 8am to 5pm, but may have classes or activities that   occur in the evenings or on weekends to meet the needs of their clients. Members serve full time at their host sites. Members also serve additional hours each month through group service projects, committees, and training coalitions. These   projects are usually occur in the evenings and/or on the weekend. top

What is a site mentor?

Members are assigned site mentors to help them develop professionally and personally.  They work closely with members providing them with opportunities, assistance, and feedback.  Site mentors also supervise members, oversee their day-to-day activities and sign member timesheets and service activity logs. top

Will I get any time off?

Members receive 15 personal days off each service term. These 15 days include personally requested time off, sick days, and any time needed for medical/graduate school interviews. Additionally, the NFHC members receive 10 pre-set AmeriCorps holidays throughout the service term. top

Can I work or go to school while part of the Health Corps?

The North Florida Health Corps does allow for members to work and/or attend classed during their year of service. However, the NFHC members are very busy with service, meetings, trainings, committees, and events. This makes it very hard to work or attend classes at the same time. Although it is not impossible to work or attend classes while serving, your commitment to the program requires your attendance at corps meetings/events/trainings. The commitment is roughly 35-40 hours per week for service at your host site. top

Can I finish early- before the 46 weeks?

Members are expected to serve for the entire contracted term of 46 weeks. The agreement with the host sites is that they will have a full time member for the entire term of service. If a member plans on finishing early, this should be addressed before service begins. Members who finish early will not receive their entire living allowance. top

Will I serve with other NFHC members?

Some of our host sites request 1 member, however some request more than one, so it is possible to be serving at the same site as another member. There are always ongoing service opportunities for the entire Corps and plus monthly meetings, service projects, and committees work ensure that members interact on a regular basis. top

Who will I be serving with?

Members will be exposed to numerous professionals depending on the site they serve at.  Members may interact with case managers, physicians, nurses, health educators, program coordinators, etc. The clients a member may work with might include: homeless, uninsured, children, elderly, poor, HIV/AIDS, disabled, etc. top

Do you provide housing?

Our program does not provide housing.  However, in the past the members that relocate from out of state have used Craig's list or an apartment guide to find housing.  Members have also lived at Melrose Apartments, which offer individual leases for residents in their 3 and 4 bedroom apartments (furnished and unfurnished).  If members are interested in a fellow-NFHC roommate, they can let the Program Director know and she will share email addresses and contact information so they can correspond. top

The NFHC program has been one of the best experiences that I have had.  After graduating college, I did not know what to do with myself.  I knew that I wanted to pursue a higher degree, but felt uncertain about what course of study I would want to go forward with.  I knew that I wanted to gain work experience, but I was uncertain of the opportunities that would be granted to me without previous field experience and being straight out of college.  By joining the NFHC, I was able to serve in a position that has given me relevant work experience, I was able to learn under the direction of a passionate mentor, and I was able to narrow down my future goals.  Because of the opportunity that I have had here in promoting health education, I have solidified the goal to eventually pursue a career in health education of some sort.  I am very grateful for my time and experience gained by NFHC and would highly recommend others to consider this opportunity as well.
