The North Florida Health Corps is a program of the National Health Corps AmeriCorps program. The program began in Jacksonville in 2004 with the mission of helping to fulfill unmet healthcare needs and to decrease disparities in the local healthcare system. The North Florida Health Corps is administered by the Duval County Health Department’s Maternal and Child Health Division in partnership with local community agencies. NFHC members serve in health care and public health settings and provide a variety of health-related services. Whether serving the homeless population, HIV/AIDS patients, children, the uninsured, or other underserved individuals, Jacksonville is full of opportunities for Corps members.
North Florida Health Corps members commit to providing 1700 hours of service over a 46 week term of service. Each member is placed within a local organization and fulfills the majority of their service at their site through activities such as conducting health outreach, teaching health education classes, and helping enrolling people in health insurance and pharmaceutical assistance programs. Members are required to attend the monthly member meeting, as well as to participate in a monthly group service project. Members are also encouraged to provide individual and group outside service to local organizations as being involved in the community is an important aspect of being a part of the North Florida Health Corps.
